THE FIRST PART of June is always an exciting time in Pine Knoll Shores! The 8th annual Kayak for the Warriors (K4W) will be held the first weekend in June, the 6th. The events surrounding the main kayak event are drawing as big a crowd as the actual race itself! Rather than talk about the event itself, I would like to focus on the planning that goes into such a huge event and the people that make it happen.
This event is the hallmark of fundraisers! Last year you raised over $80,000!! Planning for the 2015 Kayak for the Warriors starts the day after the 2014 K4W. Our master over this year’s events is no stranger to K4W, Mr. Bud Pitzer. Once again he has assembled an all-volunteer team and has three team captains, one for each of the three events.
On Saturday, May 30, the 5k Military Challenge Run was held at 9am. The team captain is Dr. John Dowler. The team captain for this year’s auction is Celeste Lindley. It will start at 6:30pm on Thursday, June 4, and once again will be held at the aquarium in Pine Knoll Shores. The signature events are held on Saturday, June 6. Sam Scudder is the team captain for that day. As in the past, Saturday’s events will start at Garner Park. Everyone is encouraged to join in at any time and any place.
The end of June is also the end of our town’s fiscal year. The budget year 2015/2016 starts on July 1. It has been seven years since we have had a change in taxes in Pine Knoll Shores. Last month, I talked about the tough decisions your board has to make to keep your home and town safe. We will be adding another full-time firefighter in the coming fiscal year. If we didn’t do this, your insurance rates have the likelihood of skyrocketing.
We will also be doing some maintenance on our public safety building. Our infrastructure continues to need maintenance, and this is part of it. We have been taking care of our town hall and the water mains and pipes of the water department, but it’s now time to take care of our largest structure for the town. We live in a very fragile environment, yet it is also very harsh and we have to stay vigilant on our maintenance.
A little about safety on our local streets. Now that spring is here in Pine Knoll Shores and we’re all trying to forget the definition of “cabin fever,” we want to get out and walk our beautiful streets. Please be aware of vehicles traveling in our neighborhoods. Walking single file keeps the drivers from worrying about hitting a pedestrian. No one wants that.
Filing for this fall’s elections will start on July 6-17 at the Carteret County Board of Elections. There are two PKS Commissioners positions and the mayor position up for election this year. Election day is Nov. 3 this year.
